Doctor X lifts lid on health service

Thursday, May 26th, 2011

A junior hospital doctor has written a book which claims to ‘lift the lid’ on the Irish health system.

The man, who is hiding his true identity because of possible effects on his career, is calling himself ‘Doctor X’.

Today he told national radio that the two biggest problems with the health service are lack of accountability and the two-tiered system, public and private.

The book, called ‘The Bitter Pill’, is available from Monday.

“Consultants hold all the power in the Irish system, and that is one of the main problems,” Doctor X said on RTE’s Morning Ireland.

He said the authorities were full of talk at the moment, but action was thin on the ground.

“There’s a lot of grandiose speeches, but some situations are paradoxical, such as the announcement of another 1,500 private hospital beds,” he said. “There is no shortage of beds in private hospitals, so why create another 1,500? A few people make more money from it, but there is no benefit to the public.”
